What This Retreat Is About

In a beautiful confluence of Scripture and Tradition, the Liturgical Year is the Church’s ultimate spiritual program. Guided by the Holy Spirit, Holy Mother Church has given us the seasons — Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter, and Ordinary Time — as a sacred rhythm meant to shape and sanctify us.

This retreat will help you:

  • See the Liturgical Year as a living framework for the Word of God
  • Discover how each liturgical season invites you into deeper participation in the life of Christ
  • Learn how to pray and live the seasons as a lay person, in family life, work, and community
  • Reignite your love for the Eucharist, the calendar of feasts, and the Church’s wisdom

The Church’s year isn’t just for priests and religious — it’s a universal gift meant to form the soul of every baptized person.

"Within the cycle of a year, moreover, [the Church] unfolds the whole mystery of Christ, from the Incarnation and birth until the ascension, the day of Pentecost, and the expectation of blessed hope and the coming of the Lord.

Recalling thus the mysteries of redemption, the Church opens to the faithful the riches of her Lord's powers and merits, so that these are in some way made present for all time, and the faithful are enabled to lay hold upon them and become filled with saving grace.”

– Sacrosanctum Concilium, 102

What is the Biblical Spirituality for the Laity series?

The Biblical Spirituality for the Laity is our conviction that the Bible provides the foundation of our spiritual life. Sometimes, it can become overwhelming to consider all the various spiritualities that Church offers in her Tradition: the Carmelite spirituality, the Benedictine spirituality or an Ignatian spirituality, just to name a few.

While all of this is beautiful and comes together to show the breadth and richness of the Church's offering to us as lay people, the Church herself reminds us our spiritual life must be deeply rooted in the Word of God.

Every spirituality within the Catholic Church flourishes when it sets Scripture as its sturdy foundation. Dei Verbum expresses this with great clarity:

"For in the sacred books, the Father who is in heaven meets His children with great love and speaks with them; and the force and power in the word of God is so great that it stands as the support and energy of the Church, the strength of faith for her sons, the food of the soul, the pure and everlasting source of spiritual life" (DV, 21).

When we consume the Word, our spiritual life flourishes, allowing our lay vocation to become the salt of the earth and the light of the world for those we encounter.

The Augustine Institute is dedicated to helping you grow deeper in the biblical spirituality of your lay vocation by offering this series of retreats.
